The coldest river in the world is not located in the North Pole or the South Pole, but in Europe. It is the Neretva River (also known as Narenta), which flows through Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia with a length of about 230 km.

According to World Atlas, Neretva originates in the mountains of the Dinaric Alps at an altitude of about 1,227m above sea level. This high altitude makes the river temperature extremely low. The part with the lowest temperature is concentrated in the Upper Neretva region. Even in summer, the coldest part of the river can be only 7-8 degrees Celsius.

The Neretva River and the surrounding areas are home to many species of flora and fauna. About a quarter of European fish species are found in this river. However, the river is facing threats from the surrounding environment, causing the number of species to decline. For example, the construction of hydroelectric dams along the river or some invasive animals.
